How To Be a Real Teacher

February, 5^th- 9^th 2018

Now, we arrived at the amazing third week. It was the time for me to be a Real Teacher. I had to face the real students. Grade 10 Science A be my class to practice teaching. My topic to teach was Differential of Calculus.  Actually on the first day, I was so nervous because it was the first time for me to teach in class. Many questions appear on my mind.  Could I explain Mathematics well? How about if my students couldn’t understand with my explanation? How about if I did some mistakes? and etc. In the class I started to teach the students by prayer, check the attendance, give motivations, explain the topic, give them activity and evaluation. On the first day, after explaining the topic, I gave them questions and I was shocked because they could answer well all of the questions that I given. It was really challenge for me. They were excellent in Math and I was so happy that they could understand well my explanation. I tried to motivate myself to have courage and face it all and fortunately after I taught in Grade 10 Science A. Ma’am Karen said that it was the good performance for the first time, but I had to loud my voice when I explained lesson in class because there are 52 students in the class, I had to manage the class well especially manage time well. The next day I also taught the same topic but unfortunately I gave the hard questions for my students so that most of them confused and we spent many times to answer only one question, so I couldn’t manage the time well. My students were curious about the topic and the questions that I given to them. I tried my best to make them understand. But, Ma’am Karen said it was okay, started to manage your time well in class and don’t give too hard questions for your students, started to give them simple questions before give them hard question and do your best for tomorrow. Although I felt a little bit regret but I should do my best every teaching in class. Actually the students in Grade 10 Science A were so smart, active, and critical. It was the challenge for me to teach them. When I enter Grade 10-A, seems that I have strong spirit. I didn’t know that’s why? When I saw my students face, my students smile there was a power that come from my heart to teach in the long time in this class. They were so interest in learning Mathematics, they heard me when I teach, they made me smile, they were so active when I teach, although sometimes they were so noisy but I could control them. I realized that “It is the Real Teacher”.

On, 8^th February 2018 one of the lecturer in TAU Ma’am Kat get married and she invited us to come in her reception in the night. The place was in the Hall behind our hostel. Actually I was so confused should I come or not? Because tomorrow I would do my final demonstration, I had to prepare lesson plan and learning about my topic. My mind divided into two things and on this day I was so nervous to face the final demonstration tomorrow. But, it was the honor for us that Ma’am Kat invited us, so I decided to come in her wedding party. I forgot my final demonstration for a while hehehe J. All of us (TAU squads) came in her wedding party. She looked so beautiful and her husband is so handsome. Then, we took some pictures with her and enjoyed the delicious dinner hehehe :). After we attended the wedding party I directly back to the Hostel and prepare all of the things for Final Demonstration :)

  Finally, it was the time for Final Demonstration. I was more nervous than the first time I taught in class before, I assumed that it was not final demonstration. It just daily teaching in the class. When I did Final demonstration, I taught about The Higher Order Derivatives of Trigonometric Function. I really really nervous but I tried to fight it. I started to explain the lesson and give them questions to remind them the lesson before and OMG I was shocked again it was not competition but they tried to compete to answer my questions. Then, I gave them group activity like game and they really like the method and enjoyed it. After that, I asked them to finish the questions in front of the class and explain it. They could it well. I was so happy to see them..It means that I was successful to face the final demonstration.  Fortunately, I could face it well and Ma’am Karen said you have good passion in teaching Mathematics. So, I had to improve my skill again then I could be great teacher. I always remember what Ma’am Karen said “ If you want to Master in something that you do, you must love it first”. Be a teacher is come from my heart and I hope it’s not the last for the teaching but it’s the beginning to be a Great Teacher in the future. After final demonstration I was so happy but at the same time I was sad because it was the last time to teach in Grade 10-A Science. I wanted to stay long here and teach you guys but the time not permission me :(. It was the farewell with my students. I just said thank you for everything that my students given to me and teach me how to be a Real teacher. I hope the knowledge that I share can useful for you all. I’m gonna miss you 10-A. Then, I asked them to take some pictures and surprised they asked me to take a video for them and they said thank you for teaching us Ma’am Winda. After that, they sang a song for me. My tears fell apart L. Then they hug me and said if you have opportunity, please visit us again. I will miss you Ma’am Winda and I will never forget you :(

Alaminos, I'm Coming :)

3^rd of February 2018

Today, it’s the free time. No Class! No Observation Class! No Teaching Assistant. I called this day “The Real Holiday”. Yeah, during a week we were focused on class but now it’s our beautiful free time. Well, today we’re going to One Hundred Islands in Alaminos. One hundred islands is the protected area located in Alaminos, Pangasinan in the northern Philippines. Only three of them have been developed for tourism: Governor Island, Quezon Island, and Children's Island.  It was the first time for me to visit this place. I wake up at 05.00 a.m. to prepare all of the things because we should go at 06.00 a.m. by TAU bus.  After we have done prepare all of the things, we were ready to go to One Hundred Islands. I screamed on my mind “OHI, I’m coming” heheh. During the way I spent my time for sleeping because I lost my sleeping beauty because many activities hehehe. Then, the bus stopped in one place that people called “Jollibee”. Wow, Jollibee again heheh. Yeah,  it was the time for having breakfast. We just took away our breakfast. We didn’t breakfast because in front of the Jollibee there was the suitable place to take the pictures. So, we prefer took some pictures. At the same time of taking the pictures I met my friends that placed in Pangasinan State University. OMG, we hug each other because it was like surprise for me. Actually they also visited place in Alaminos but we had the different destination. But, it was okay. Let’s take photo guys :).

After that, we continued our journey to One Hundred Islands. We should use boat to go there during 30 minutes. We used orange  float or life jacket on the boat for our safety.  The first island that we visited is Governor's Island. During the way, I never stop amazed because it was the beautiful place. I like the sea and I like the wave. The sea’s water  sometimes blue and sometimes green. Yeah, it depends on the depth. In my left and right side I could see the green tree and the biggest stones, maybe the stones became the islands hehe. I also heard the bird singing that accompany our journey. Then, we arrived in the Governor islands. Wow! So beautiful! The first thing that we did is breakfast because our stomach was singing (we were hungry). We enjoyed our Rice, Chicken, and Spaghetti from Jollibee. After breakfast we went to the highest place there to see the beautiful view. We should pass the stairs and it was look like 1000 stairs. I felt really really tired. But, when I saw the beautiful view, it paid my tired hahaha J. At the top we could see the awesome view of One Hundred Islands so it was the time to collect the memories by taking pictures J. Then, we go down to the seashore for swimming. But, actually I couldn’t swimming and the weather was so hot. It Seems that the sun burning my skin hahah. So we just enjoyed the view here and took pictures again. Without picture we were not happy :)

Then, we continued our journey to the Children's Islands by using boat again. It just 15 or 20 minutes to arrived there. During the way, we could also find the beautiful view. When, we arrived there I directly focused on souvenirs that selling in the island but I didn’t buy because I didn’t bring a lot of money. Then, we explored the Children islands. After that, my friends were swimming but I didn’t because I couldn’t swimming and I felt so cold there. I was afraid if I got influenza. So, I decided to sit in the seashore. But, sometimes I go around the place to see more about Children’s islands. When my friends have done swimming, we decided to back to quay by using boat and back to the Hostel because we were so tired. We also spent many times here.

During the way to the quay my friends were sleep on the boat and they still use wet clothes hahha. When we arrived at the quay, they changed their clothes and we were ready back to the hostel. On the way I saw my watch and it shows 07.00 p.m. So, the bus stopped in the place. Oh what place? Of course Jollibee again. So we had dinner at Jollibee before we continue our journey to the hostel. After dinner, we enjoyed the beautiful night in Alaminos for a while then  back to the Hostel.

On the way, all of us were sleep so, there was no anymore voice from us heheh. Suddenly, the bus stopped in a place. OMG? What was place? Yeah, this is Hostel. We already arrived at Hostel. Then, we entered the Hostel and no more sleep because tomorrow we have to teach so we would to prepare materials and lesson plan. Fortunately, I have done studied and prepared my lesson plan so I could continue my sleeping beauty. This is my story today :) See you soon Alaminos :)

The Power of Class Observation and Teaching Assistant

29^th January 2018 – 2^nd of February 2018

Today it is the schedule for Teaching Assistant. But, in the first day I still continued to observe the class because I had to know more information about teacher and students. In this time I observed teacher about planning for teaching, preparing lesson and materials, classroom management, time management and organizing activities, problem solving, model, method, and strategy in teaching, measurement and evaluation.  It was many things that I had to observe but it would be the challenge for me and I learned so many things from Ma’am Karen when I observed her in teaching Mathematics. I really like when she taught in class because she explain the lesson very well with the creative ways, so she could attract the student’s attention. Before my cooperating teacher teaching in class, she always make the lesson plan as the guidance to teach in class and also in the class she checked the attendance of the students before beginning the lesson. When she taught in class, she used different strategy to attract the attention of students. Sometimes she gave the students questions to recall or reminds the lesson before or gave the students critical questions about the lesson. She also used the learning media that made from “Manila Paper” but in Philippines they called it “Kartolina” to make the creative learning and I saw that students really enjoyed when she used learning media. She applied cooperative learning or working in pairs when she gave students activity. After that she called the representative of each group to finish the question in the chalkboard and the students should explain it. Sometimes her voice is louder because there are 52 students in the class and the students be noisy. When she gave students evaluation, she asked students to take a half of a whole sheet of paper then she gave them questions and students should answer the questions in the papers by themselves. After that, students collect the paper. So, she should control the class well. I also observed students about daily activity in class, how they understand the lesson, the feedback between teacher and student, their effort when they can’t understand the lesson, how they respect the teacher, how they work in pairs or groups, the attendance, and evaluation. Actually, I observed grade 10-A Science and 10-B Science but my Cooperating Teacher Ma’am Karen A. Mariano gave me the chance to observed student college where she taught. So, I observed three classes. Based on my observation most of students in grade 10 and also students college  are so smart and really like the lesson. They could understand well when the teacher explained the lesson and they were also so active in class. I was so excited because all of them were excellent in Math.  But, sometimes Grade 10 was a little bit noisy especially when the teacher gave them activity. It was different with students college because the teacher could control them so well so they didn’t make noisy during the learning process. In class observation I collected all of the information and if there was information that I didn’t get in the class I asked Ma’am Karen about it and how lucky I am, Ma’am Karen always gave me the clear explanation.

In the second day, third day, and fourth day, I started my activity for teaching assistant in Grade 10-A and 10-B Science. What should I do in Teaching Assistant?  I had to help teacher to manage the class, I had to help students if they couldn’t understand the lesson, help teacher to give students activity and check the paper of students, and also help teacher to handle the class if the teacher couldn’t come in class. Actually at the first time in Teaching Assistant, I couldn’t help my cooperating teacher so well especially in managed the class when the students make noisy because I felt doubt to ask my students to be silent. I didn’t know that’s why? Maybe I was a little bit shy. But, I tried to do it because in the class I was the second teacher so they had to listen to me and I got it J. In the next day, I did the same in the first day of Teaching Assistant. But sometimes my students still shy to asked me when they have problem in Math. But, I tried to come close to them and asked them, so they started to explain which part that makes them confused then I gave them explanation and how lucky they could understand my explanation. I enjoyed in Teaching Assistant because it taught me how to be a teacher. At the same time of teaching assistant, I also started to make lesson plan. Wow? I didn’t know when I talked about lesson plan sometimes I afraid about it. Why? Because I should prepare my lesson plan  so well before teaching in class as the guidance for me. I should make four lesson plans but it was okay for me although sometimes I felt a little bit frustrated. But, Ma’am Karen always helped me and never forgot to revise my lesson plan. I made detailed lesson plan about Derivative. Actually, I was not familiar with the Philippines Lesson Plan but Ma’am Karen gave me the explanation so I could understand well. In the last day, exactly on February, 2^nd 2018. I didn’t have class for teaching assistant, so I used this day to finish my lesson plan and give it to Ma’am Karen to revise it. Fortunately, in my lesson plan I just did a little mistakes, Ma’am Karen told me that what was the part that have to change and gave me some suggestion about my strategy in teaching and also gave me a little explanation about the topic that I’m going to teach . Fortunately, I could revise it at this day. So, my four lesson plan has done at this day. I was so happy :)
